One Year Older

What does one do when they’ve counted a million sheep but still can’t sleep?

Blog.

Chances are I probably wouldn’t make much sense in this state, but you never know. I could quite possibly come up with a most profound word of wisdom that will single-handedly change the world. Sharonucius is what they’ll call me.

Lame. So lame.

It was my birthday not too long ago. While I always make sure I have the greatest time enjoying myself to no end, I always take a moment to look back on the past year to see how far I’ve come since my last birthday. “One year older, one year wiser” as they say (even if it isn’t necessarily true). There is nothing worse than remaining stagnant.

Some time back, I attended a talk by three fantastic entrepreneurs. One of them was the Chief Executive of Enterprise, and he shared something that really resonated with me: Mountain People and Valley People. Mountain people are those who continuously have their sights set on something greater, to do something different. Whatever their mountain is, they plan an expedition with every ounce of forecast possible and prepare for any eventualities. They set their sights on the summit and do not let others discourage them from their goal. When they get to the top, they have their eyes set on another peak. They are big-hearted and have the strength and resilience needed to overcome any obstacle. Valley people are those who are happy to be where they are, who say “I would’ve done that but…” or “What’s the point?”. They are those who expect a cable car to the top of the mountain and don’t have a vision beyond the valley. They are the people who try to get you down, say unkind words, and try to discourage you at every turn. They are the small-hearted, petty people who get upset about little things.

Yes, we’ve all heard the Mountain and Valley People story in one form or another. But somewhere along the line, we forget. We forget that we have what it takes to climb that mountain, as difficult as it may be. We forget that there will always be plenty of Valley People around. We forget that we may be just one step away from our final goal.

So let me tell you this.

You have what it takes no matter how daunting it may seem. Sometimes in life, it takes 10% knowledge and 90% courage. And sometimes, to kickstart this journey, you just need a reminder that there is greatness within you. It’s not about stepping out of your comfort zone, it’s about enlarging it.

There you go. My little Sharonucius moment. Not life-changing but hey, I tried. Best I can do at 3.30 in the morning.

One Year Older

Oh the joys of aging.

Anybody have any good tips for getting to sleep when you can’t?

Anyways, I hope you all have a fantastic week ahead! Will you be tuning in to the Royal Wedding? I plan to be glued to my couch for the entire day.

Love,
