First of all, Happy Valentine’s Day to all you lovelies! Hope you’re all enjoying yourselves and feeling extra loved up with all the love in the air!
This was a drawing I did many MANY years ago. I realize I could do better with the man’s hair (they’re more difficult to draw than women’s!). I copied it from a poster advert I saw. I loved it because most photos show couples kissing while this shows them almost kissing. And I think the “almost kiss” is the most romantic part because both are leaning in and you can imagine their anticipation without knowing if they actually kiss or not. So for me, I feel it evokes more emotion and romantic feeling at the stage of the “almost kiss”. But I’m digressing again.
Young love is exciting – butterflies in your stomach, heart fluttering, weak at the knees, the cheesey grin that plasters itself on your face when you see the object of your affection (so cliché but you know it’s true!). Everything is a new and fresh adventure as you get to know the other person. It’s probably the easiest time in a relationship when you’re in a world of your own and it seems nothing can throw you off track. Everything seems so easy and perfect. This “honeymoon phase” can last a long while and it’s a time that should be enjoyed and cherished as much as possible to give you lasting memories to draw from in difficult times because it reminds you of all the reasons you first loved the person.
But I love old love. When you’ve spent your entire life with someone, found out all their bad habits, endured all their annoyances, struggled through difficulties and you STILL want to hold their hand. These are my grandparents – in their eighties and still holding hands everywhere they go. Still taking care of each other, still loving each other as much as before. When my grandpa was seriously ill in hospital recently, my grandma was very anxious and worried about him. She was worried about his health, but also that some other girl might want to steal him away while she’s not around! There could not be any cuter lovebirds than these two.
They’ve been through good times, bad times and very tough times. Shared much laughter, shed many tears, raised a family, sacrificed all they had so their children may have a better life than they did. Through it all, they stuck to their promise of a life together forever. Through it all, they resolved that they would go through it together. Through it all, they never gave up on their love for each other though it may have been easier to. Much like fire refines pure gold, these challenges have only served to refine and strengthen their love.
And it was all worth it.
In a society where divorce is rife and families split up, it is encouraging to see that love can last. It is more than just a feeling or a fairytale. It is a promise. A selfless commitment to another person whether in good times or bad, to always stick by them and never give up. No matter what. This is why I think old love is more beautiful. I see strength that pulls through tough times, perseverance that never gives up, grace that overlooks any weaknesses, selflessness that cares for the other person first, understanding to put one’s pride aside, humility to admit “I was wrong”, and most importantly, a promise upheld. And besides, isn’t it love that lasts that we call true love?
I bought these very cute key caps for two very special people this Valentine’s Day. Aren’t they the cutest?
I hope you’re all having a very special time with the people you love (it’s not what you do but who you’re with!). And…
Happy Valentine’s Day!

First I have to say you are very talented — love that drawing of yours! (Can I just say, I would LOVE to have her hair? ;) ) I agree with you about old love…there’s nothing cuter than seeing an elderly couple holding hands, or an elderly husband opening a door for his wife…or bringing her flowers! So cute!
Happy Valentine’s Day, Sharon!
Thanks Faith! It took me AGES though :). And you’re so right, it’s too cute when you see that!
Happy Valentine’s Day to you too! Well, a belated one :)
Sharon, the drawing you did is simply beautiful, you have the artist soul in you don’t you? I certainly do agree with you and Faith about old love, it’s heart warming to see them holding hands walking in the street!
The key caps is so cute!
Happy Valentines Day Sharon!
Thanks Jess! I do enjoy drawing from time to time :). Happy Valentine’s Day!
By the way, I’m so sorry it seemed like your comments never showed up. For no good reason they went into my spam box. Sometimes that happens so I always check before I empty it and I found your comments. I’ve just put the first one through :). But I’m very sorry about that! I don’t understand why that happened.
Holy moly! You drew that, Sharon?! Girl, you’ve got talent! When I first saw the picture I thought you got it from an internet source or something. Then when I read that you actually drew that, I was in awe.
I love old love and seeing old people holding hands while going for walks. Everytime I see that, it really brings a smile to my face. I remember reading Mary’s posts about your grandparents. I hope they are doing well. Even if you didn’t tell us those were your grandparents, I think I would’ve asked because I think I remember seeing a picture of them holding hands on Mary’s blog. Old love really is true love.
Those key caps are so cute! Will I be seeing them on Mary’s blog soon? ;) Hope you and your loved ones have a very happy valentine’s day!
Lol thanks LeQuan! But it took me very many hours so I’m not quite the art genius haha. It’s so cute watching them when they go for walks, just makes me smile :).
Oh the key caps were not for her! Haha. Hope you had a wonderful Valentine’s too! :D
I find old love sweeter. :) And it’s more true and not superficial, in my opinion. so those grandparents are sweet! :)
I agree with this: “When you’ve spent your entire life with someone, found out all their bad habits, endured all their annoyances, struggled through difficulties and you STILL want to hold their hand.”
Awesome drawing, by the way. :)
Thanks Jenn! Yup! Definitely is sweeter :). Easy enough to want to be with someone who is all lovely, but when you still want to be with them even after finding out everything annoying about them, it’s too sweet. :)
wow, you are a qualified artist! What else have you not shown us?? old love, eternal love..if i’m able to get this, that would be the most amazing thing that in my life. At this moment, i dont know yet but i feel grateful and appreciative of what’s is happening to my life now..though sometimes it may seem a bit hard and confusing but i try to be calmer and tell myself that everything’s going to be okay.
Thanks Lena! :D But no, not qualified haha. I just draw when I feel inspired. I feel the same, to have that would be the most amazing thing in life :). I love how you think. It’s always important to appreciate the present. And you know something, everything will always work out for the best, even if it doesn’t seem like it will at the time :).
Wow, girl, you’ve got talent!! That is the prettiest picture ever. I love the way you shaded the picture and it looks perfect. Their facial features are very proportionate. It’s not easy to draw something like that. :) Happy Valentine’s Day and also, I really enjoyed reading your thoughts on love. It was very deep.
Haha thanks girl! You’re too kind to call it perfect! Because I wouldn’t lol. But yes, it did take me a looooong time. Hope you had a great Valentine’s! And er yeah, sometimes my mouth (or rather brain) runs away with me lol. But love is deep isn’t it? With all the fluffiness that normally goes around on Valentine’s, I thought I should write something meaningful as a tribute to what the day celebrates :)
Lol! Everyone is always critical about their own work, but others will always see the best. Like when my classmates get their school pictures for the yearbook, they always say that they look terrible when in fact they looks great. :) I didn’t do anything special, but I went shopping with my mom and we went out to eat lunch with my brother too. What did you do for Valentine’s? And yea, love sure is deep. You are so thoughtful and profound. :)
Haha you’re probably right about that! Shopping is always fun :D. And I’m so jealous because you’ve got tons of great stuff in the States! I didn’t do anything special either and probably less eventful than yours lol. Had a nice dinner though :). Thoughtful and profound? Lol that’s too big a compliment, I suddenly feel so wise haha.
What a beautiful post :’) old couples really ARE the sweetest! I very much agree with your values on commitment, well put! :)
Thanks Catherine! They are, aren’t they? :)
Wow Sharon…nice drawing…hope you had a nice V Day!
Thanks Juliana! And same to you! :)
What a precious photo of your grandparents! I hope hubby and I can both make it to our eighties! :)
Thanks Betty! Oh I know you both will :). You cook so well and the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach right? *wink* haha.
Wow, you’re so talented Sharon. The drawing is beautiful…amazing.
This is one of the best post. I am so touched by your description on Old Love.
Thanks Peh Sun :). Thought to write something meaningful as a tribute to love. It’s Valentine’s so I have all the excuse haha :). Hope you had a great Valentine’s!
What a lovely post and your drawing is amazing, such talent :)
Hope you had a wonderful valentines day and that you have an amazing weekend…
Hope you had a wonderful Valentine’s too!
