Chocolate Heart Biscuits

Valentine’s Day is coming up! And it makes me excited because I see heart shapes EVERYWHERE. I have a bit of a soft spot for romance so it put me in the mood to make heart-shaped food. What can I say, I’m a huge cheesey cheesepuff! In any case, I decided to make some heart-shaped chocolate biscuits.

Ingredients

150 g butter, softened at room temperature
100 g castor sugar
2 medium eggs
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
200 g plain flour
25 g cocoa powder

Icing (if you want it):
300 g royal icing sugar
50 ml cold water
Food colouring (optional)

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (I use a fan oven). Beat butter and sugar until evenly mixed.
  2. Separate eggs. Add the egg yolks and vanilla extract to the butter mixture and mix well.
    Beating Mixture

It’s brownish because I made a batch of chocolate cupcakes just before this and didn’t wash the bowl.

  3. Sift flour and cocoa and stir into the butter mixture until dough-y. Wrap the dough in clingfilm and chill in the fridge for 20 minutes.
  4. Roll out dough and cut out heart shapes. If you want a hole in the middle (you’ll see why), cut out a circle roughly 1 cm in diameter. Put the biscuits on a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper. Bake for 12 minutes.

  5. Leave to cool on the tray for 5 minutes then transfer to a wire rack to finish cooling. And there you have it! I love the ribbons so that’s what the hole was for!

ICING OPTION:

Put 50 ml water in a bowl and beat in icing sugar until smooth. You can divide into a few portions to add food colouring. Spread on cooled biscuits and leave to set.

Thanks Esther! They’re not the soft chewy type. I don’t know how to explain what they’re like but they taste good, to my surprise haha.

What a cute post! I love the extra touch with the ribbons Sharon! The person receiving these must be very special. Home made gifts are always the best, especially when you put “all your heart” into it. Haha. Ok lame.
The checker board is tres cute too. I’m totally a girlie girl sappy type when it comes to hearts and love. The Notebook is one of my favorite movies. Nuf said ;-)

Thanks LeQuan :D. I love the ribbons too. And yup, very special ;) haha. You’re so funny lol. I know I say that a lot but you just make me laugh :D. I’m much the same, especially around this time of year haha. I haven’t seen the Notebook, it’s always been on my list of movies to watch but never got round to it. I simply must! Ever After is one of my favourites – the one with Drew Barrymore, a retelling of Cinderella. Nothing sappier than fairytales lol.

I haven’t seen Ever After. Life changes when you have 3 kids (hubby included…teehee). I’ve heard it was really good though. Must rent sometime after I kick everyone out of the house :-D

hi, love the idea of hole in the biscuit. you know, i’ve seen somewhere in the blogs too about the holes in the biscuits..just another idea..instead of just tying ribbons around them , we can put up one individual thin ribbon to each biscuit and tie it to a piece of note with a lovely message so each piece of cookie comes with a message..hope you understand what i’m trying to say. Actually i wanted to make this for just a few large CNY cookies but just no time. I see if i got time to make this for tomorrow..most likely not..btw, happy valentine’s day to you!!

Oh I have to find these other blogs! So I guess the hole would be quite a bit smaller (mine turned out too big actually). That is soooo lovely to tie a lovely message to each. I wish I had thought of that! How sweet would it be to get a nice note with your cookie. Hope you had the time to make them, would love to see it! And happy Valentine’s to you too! :D
